Our story

Fifteen years ago, longtime architect and short time rental property owner Dave Spitzer wasn’t making any money on one of his investments. ADUs were not popular in the early 2000s, but Dave had always been a firm believer in compact development and the benefits that it provides to Portland’s neighborhoods. Dave took a leap, designing and building his first ADU on his own property.

Dave’s first ADU made his rental property profitable.

Dave formally started ADU PDX after the economic downturn of 2008, helping Portland families and developers add value to their properties when budgets were especially tight. Over a decade in, ADU PDX has stuck to its principles of density and efficiency, designing over a hundred ADUs and helping make Portland’s neighborhoods more beautiful.

Dave has been practicing architecture since graduating from Syracuse University in 1987, working on both coasts and Alaska in architecture and structural engineering. In his practice, Dave distills complex projects to clear, simple terms which are expressed in his creation of efficient and functional designs. Dave’s experience as a developer, project manager, and residential & commercial rental property owner provides a well-rounded perspective for understanding and addressing his client’s needs. He also has extensive knowledge of code issues, permitting processes, and bureau requirements. Combined with his easygoing personality, Dave has applied his expertise to make ADU PDX a creative and successful architectural practice.
